Greece - Athens National Garden

Athens National Garden

Greece is a country typically visited for its rich history, mythology and beautiful vistas. However, some people also like to incorporate native plant seeking and garden exploration as part of their travels. The following article showcases the ancient landscapes of Greece and the plants that inhabit this Mediterranean region.

Karl began his Greece adventure on March 20th in Acropolis, Greece. Here are the stories that caught his eye. Hope you enjoy!

The first day of this botanical adventure in the Mediterranean mecca of Greece is starting with some outstanding sights! I'm ready to sink my horticultural teeth into some of the best that springtime has to offer! at Εθνικός Κήπος / National Garden.

Upon entry to the gardens you're welcomed with towering Washingtonia palms with formal bedding of winter annuals including Viola and Matthiola enjoying the cool springtime sunshine.

Taking a break from Athens National Garden, Karl decided to stroll down one of the many pedestrian streets which revealed abundant artwork and charming alleys at Stoa of Attalos

Next, it was time to visit the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera rooftop garden. This rooftop garden covers multiple acres and is filled with plants both native and adapted to the region. The photo gallery below displays some of the plants that can be found at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Not a bad start to a botanic excursion! Next on the itinerary was a visit to the Mediterranean Garden Society, headquartered in Athens.
